On the Road to CO2 Neutrality

Video: Hilti: Loading an electric car

We are committed to being COneutral by 2023. Whether it’s a sport utility vehicle, car, truck or van, the vehicles we drive at Hilti contribute the biggest portion of our CO2 footprint. We are now gradually shifting our vehicles to cleaner drive technologies. In 2021, we converted more than 3000 vehicles to electric or full hybrid technologies. This represents more than 20 percent of our global fleet.

Our business is energy-intensive

We are committed to being COneutral by 2023. Our business is energy-intensive – due to our manufacturing practices and the vehicles we drive to serve our customers. This is reflected in our overall global CO2 footprint of around 92,000 tons in 2021, which includes our operations and energy consumption as well as our business travel. Within our operations, our more than 14,000 vehicles have the largest impact on our CO2 balance, contributing more than 74 percent to our overall CO2 footprint.

Gradual change of Hilti’s vehicle fleet

In 2020, we began testing a methodology to reduce the CO2 emissions of the vehicle fleet on an individual market basis. And in 2021, we successfully began the conversion of our global vehicle fleet from gasoline and diesel engines to electric drives and full hybrid vehicles. We gradually change our vehicles in the context of expiring leasing contracts. By the end of 2021, more than 40 markets have active fleet shift projects. In fact, we already converted more than 3000 vehicles, which represents more than 20 percent of our global vehicle fleet. We also began sourcing exclusively green electricity for all our locations worldwide, which also includes the home-charged electricity for our electric company vehicles.

Going forward, we estimate that our vehicle fleet will be composed of roughly 50 percent battery electric vehicles and 50 percent full hybrid cars. Since we source exclusively green electricity for all our locations worldwide we can achieve virtually 100 percent emissions reduction per battery electric vehicle. Green energy sourcing also includes the electricity used when company cars are charged at a team member’s home.

Supporting the change as a team

Anke Gabrio / Account Manager Belgium: “Hilti thoroughly reviewed my opinion and preferences when it came to changing the company car to an electric car. With a reach of more than 430 km my new electric company car ensures smooth customer visits with enough inventory space to carry all Hilti tools. Additionally, they installed a charging station at my home and cover the green electricity needed to charge the car! Now our family can also drive safely and environmentally friendly in our leisure time. How cool.”

More initiatives on our path to CO2 neutrality

Besides shifting our vehicle fleet, we are driving a number of projects to reduce, replace and offset our carbon footprint. You can dig deeper into our CO2 neutrality progress in our sustainability report. The report features in-depth information on energy efficiency measures, green electricity procurement, solar installations, the development of our own CO2 offsetting projects as well as transparency on our Scope 3 emissions.

For our CO2 neutrality goal 2023 we refer to our own direct and indirect emissions as well as emissions from our business travel.

CO2 emissions

The conversion of our energy supply to green electricity led to roughly 40,000 fewer tons of CO2 emissions, the COVID-19 pandemic led to a reduction of roughly 65,000 tons (some of which is expected to be a one-time effect).

Our CO2 emissions haven risen slightly due to a catch-up to pre-pandemic operations. Even though sales picked up again to 2019 levels, emissions remained well below 2019.

In the coming years, the continued conversion of our global vehicle fleet will significantly support the reduction of our Scope 1 emissions. We continue to focus on implementing our key initiatives to reduce our CO2 emissions.

In 2023, we will be CO2 neutral. We will offset remaining CO2 emissions with our own exclusively developed offsetting projects.
